I was thinking about Machiavelli's idea that "the end justifies the means." If you do something with the intention of helping someone, but you hurt them along the way, and they cannot appreciate the outcome because of what it took to get there, was it truly worth the risk, the lies, or the sacrifice? If, in the end, they remember only the means and not the end, did the end really justify them?
